In 2026, we will have monthly workshops, working through the book “The Splendid Sampler” by Pat Sloan and Jane Davidson. It can be purchased on Amazon.
There are 100 different blocks to tackle. We will be stitching curves, doing applique, foundation paper piecing, hand embroidery, and a wide variety of traditional pieced blocks. To complete the entire quilt in one year, we will need to complete two blocks every week. You absolutely do not need to complete all 100 blocks. The book includes plenty of finishing ideas for as few as 30 completed blocks. If you are determined to finish 100 blocks, but see blocks you would rather skip, many others can be substituted. Be sure to check out thesplendidsampler.com website. The gallery is very inspiring.
Each month we will have 1 hand embroidered block, 2 foundation paper-pieced blocks, 2 appliqued blocks, and 3 to 5 traditional pieced blocks to complete. (depending on the number of weeks in that month.) Check out the schedule of blocks to plan ahead and stay organized.
Fabric Requirements: Pat Sloan recommends starting the quilt with approximately 3 yards of background fabric and a collection of about 35 to 40 fat quarters that can be added later, if needed. She suggests using a designer-created collection, but many have entirely worked from scraps. She advises choosing several focal fabrics that will be used throughout the quilt to tie everything together.
